Harnessing the Power of the MoSCoW Method: An In-Depth Guide with Practical Examples

Prioritising can feel like a daunting task, whether you’re planning your weekend or managing a big project. If only there were a handy tool to sort through that to-do list, right? Say hello to the MoSCoW method, your new best friend for all things prioritisation.

Breaking Down the MoSCoW Method

The MoSCoW method, despite its chilly name, is a warm and friendly technique that’ll make your life much easier. It’s an acronym standing for ‘Must have ‘, ‘Should have ‘, ‘Could have’, and ‘Won’t have’, giving you a neat way to order your tasks.

  • Must haves are those tasks that absolutely, positively have to be done. They’re the bread and butter of your project; without them, you’re toast!

  • Should haves are important but not critical. Imagine them as the strawberry jam to your toast – sweet, delicious, but if you’re out, your toast is still edible.

  • Could haves are your nice-to-haves. Think of them as the dusting of powdered sugar on your French toast. It’s lovely, but you’ll still enjoy your meal if it’s not there.

  • Won’t haves are those tasks that are not a priority. They’re like the cherry on top. Nice if you’ve got it, but your sundae will still taste great without it!

How About a Real-World Example?

Let’s imagine we’re creating a new mobile banking app. How would we use our newfound friend, the MoSCoW method, in this scenario?

Must haves

Our app absolutely must allow users to check their balance, transfer funds, and pay bills. Without these, it’s like serving a sundae without ice cream!

Should haves

We’d love to add features like notifications for account activity, biometric login, and saving payee details. They’re like the hot fudge and sprinkles, not essential, but boy, do they make the sundae tastier!

Could haves

Features like a chatbot for customer support or personalised financial advice are the whipped cream on top. They’re great add-ons if we have the resources.

Won’t haves

Finally, things like cryptocurrency transactions or AR-based features can wait. They’re the cherry on top – maybe we’ll add them in the future when we want to surprise our users!
